  • Trellis Coded 8PSK Modulation with Diversity on Spatially Correlated Rayleigh Fading Channel

    We have investigated the BER performance of TC 8PSK with 2 branch SC and MRC diversities on spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channel. The upper bounds using the transfer function bounding technique are derived several numerical results are shown. Although the correlation between branches causes signal-to-noise (SNR) loss (relative to uncorrelated fading case) for SC and MRC diversities, the diversity can lead to achieve the diversity gain compared to the system without diversity. It is found that the diversity gain of 4-state TC 8PSK is larger than 8-state TC 8PSK. It is also shown that the BER performance of TC 8PSK is decreased as the antenna separation is decreased.

    This paper proposes linear predictive transmission diversity for TDMA/TDD personal communication systems and evaluates the effects of fading correlation and unequal average signal power Rayleigh fading on these system. The average bit error rate (BER) performance is calculated by computer simulation and the BER of zero order prediction is theoretically analyzed. The performance degradation caused by the error from prediction, fading correlation, and unequal average signal power is found to be almost independent of each other.

    This paper considers the evaluation of the acquisition performance for an access channel preamble based on the random access procedure of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) reverse link. The parallel acquisition technique that employs the single-dwell and multiple-dwell (double-dwell) detection schemes is investigated. The acquisition performance for two detection schemes is compared in terms of the acquisition probablity and the mean acquisition time. The parallel acquisition is done by a bank of N parallel I/Q noncoherent correlators. Expressions on the detection, false alarm, and miss probabilities of the single-dwell and multiple-dwell (double-dwell) detection schemes are derived for the multiple H1 cells and multipath Rayleigh fading channel. Comparing the single-dwell detection scheme with the multiple-dwell (double-dwell) detection scheme in the case of employing the parallel acquisition technique in the reverse link, the numerical results show that the single-dwell detection scheme provides a better performance.

    ISM band has been approved for spread spectrum communication in radio LAN in Japan since December 1992. This frequency band extends from 2.474 GHz to 2.5 GHz with 26 MHz bandwide. In an indoor environment, the maximum observed delay spread is 100-200 ns in a room, it is too short to generate a selective fading, thus flat fading conditions are often observed. Serve as an alleviation, we propose a new system of multi-antenna in base station (BS) and single antenna in mobile station (MS). In this system, MS should have a simple structure for its small size and energy-saving.

  • Performance Analysis of Multilevel Coding Scheme for Rayleigh Fading Channel with Gaussian Noise

    To evaluate the coding performance of a multilevel coding scheme for Rayleigh fading channel, a virtual automatic gain control and interleaving are applied to the scheme. The automatic gain control is assumed only for the theoretical evaluation of the performance. It is noted that the bit error-rate performance of the scheme for phase shift keying does not change whether the control is assumed or not. By the effect of the virtual automatic gain control and the interleaving, a fading channel with Gaussian noise is theoretically converted into an equivalent time-invariant channel with non-Gaussian noise. The probability density function of the converted non-Gaussian noise is derived. Then, the function is applied to a formula of the bit error-rate of the scheme for non-Gaussian noise. The formula is derived for phase shift keying by modifying that for pulse amplitude modulation. The coding performance for the non-Gaussian noise channel is evaluated by the formula, and the suitable coding with ideal interleaving is searched. As a result, the coding gain of 28 dB is obtained at the bit error-rate of 10-6 by using BCH code of length 31. This result is confirmed by a simulation for the fading channel. Then, the effectiveness of the formula for finite interleaving is evaluated. Finally, the usefulness of the formula, where the noise power is doubled, is shown for a case of a differential detection.

    In this work, we present an 8-state trellis code for bit interleaved 16-QAM and the BER performance on Rayleigh fading channel is evaluated. We analyze the BER and show that the effective code length and minimum productive distance are also important criterion for code design on bit interleaved system. We design the code by considering not only minimum Hamming distance but also the effective code length and minimum productive distance. As a result, we found that the scheme employing the code achieves good BER performance on Rayleigh fading channel even with the finite interleaving size.

    This paper describes the multiple access performance of parallel combinatory spread spectrum (PC/SS) communication systems in nonfading and Rayleigh fading multipath channels. The PC/SS systems can provide the high-speed data transmission capability by transmitting multiple pseudo-noise sequences out of a pre-assigned sequence set. The performance is evaluated in terms of average bit error rate (BER) by numerical computation. In nonfading white gaussian channel, the PC/SS systems are superior to conventional direct sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) systems under the identical spreading factor condition. In Rayleigh fading channel, the performance of the PC/SS system without diversity is poorer than that of the DS/SS system. By including the explicit and implicit diversity, the performance of the PC/SS system becomes better than that of conventional DS/SS systems. A longer spreading sequence is assignable to a PC/SS system having the spreading factor equal to that in the conventional DS/SS system. Hence, the error control coding is easily. It is found that the PC/SS systems including diversity and Reed-Solomon coding improves the multiple access performance.

  • On the Word Error Probability of Linear Block Codes for Diversity Systems in Mobile Communications

    The word error probability of linear block codes is computed for diversity systems with maximal ratio combining in mobile communications with three decoding algorithms: error correction (EC), error/erasure correction (EEC), and maximum likelihood (ML) soft decoding algorithm. Ideal interleaving is assumed. EEC gives 0.1-1.5dB gain over EC. The gain of EEC over EC decreases as the number of diversity channels increases. ML soft gives 1.8-5.5dB gain over EC.

  • Performance Evaluation of Slow-Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum Transmission in Rayleigh Fading Indoor Channels

    This paper examines the retransmission probability and throughput characteristics of slow-frequency-hopping spread spectrum transmission in Rayleigh fading indoor channels of multi-cell environments. Because signal strength in a Rayleigh fading indoor channel changes slowly, retransmission probability is little influenced by the retransmission unit length and error correction capability when retransmission unit length is shorter than the fading period. With the 83.5MHz bandwidth of the 2.4GHz ISM (Industrial, Scientific, and Medical) band in the USA, quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) is expected to provide a throughput of nearly 1Mbps in each cell when we assume a shadowing margin of 18.1dB and we use 4 cells, 100 hopping frequencies, a transmission power of 600mW, and a transmission distance of 20m. And also with the 26MHz bandwidth of the 2.4GHz ISM band in Japan, QPSK is expected to provide a throughput of nearly 1Mbps in each cell under similar conditions but with 26 hopping frequencies and a transmission power of 260mW.

  • Performance Evaluation of Slow-Frequency Hopped/Joint Frequency-Phase Modulation in Broadband and Partial-Band Noise Jamming

    A new frequency hopped spread spectrum system is introduced. The frequency hopped signal is a combination of multi frequency and multi phase signals and is referred to as Frequency Hopped/Joint Frequency-Phase Modulation (FH/JFPM). A noncoherent receiver for the FH/JFPM signals is introduced and an exact expression for the bit error rate is obtained. A performance analysis of this system is given in the presence of broadband and partial-band noise jamming. The optimal jamming strategy is evaluated. The results show that under these jamming conditions the FH/JFPM perform better than the FH/M-ary DPSK and FH/M-ary FSK systems. It is also shown that for a given channel bandwidth and data rate, the FH/JFPM system has more processing gain than its FSK or DPSK counterparts.

    The effect of intersymbol interference resulting from non-matched receiver filtering on the bit error rate (BER) performance of π/4-DQPSK systems recently adopted in the North American and Japanese digital cellular standards, is analyzed in Rayleigh fading. With a Gaussian or a Butterworth (of order N, 2N10) receiver filter, the BER performance is found to degrade by only a small fraction of a decibel from the performance with ideally matched receiver filters. A 4th-order Butterworth receiver filter leads to BER curves which almost coincide with those of the ideally matched filtering condition.

    The performance of parallel combinatory spread spectrum (PC/SS) communication systems in the frequency-nonselective, slowly Rayleigh fading channel is studied. Performance is evaluated by symbol error rate using numerical computation. To overcome the performance degradation caused by fading, we also studied the effects of selection diversity and Reed-Solomon coding applied to the PC/SS system. As a result, a remarkable improvement in error rate performance is achieved with Reed-Solomon coding and diversity technique. The coding rate for the maximum coding gain is almost a half of that in the additive white gaussian noise channel.

  • Time Division Duplex Method of Transmission of Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum Signals for Power Control Implementation

    A time division duplex (TDD) direct sequence spread spectrum communication (DS-SS) system is proposed for operation in channels with Rayleigh fading characteristics. It is shown that using the TDD method is advantageous because the devices can be designed more simply, the method is more frequency efficient and as a result the systems will be less costly and less power consuming. It is also shown that an efficient power control method can be implemented for the TDD systems. In contrast to the traditional access techniques such as frequency division multiple access (FDMA) and time division multiple access (TDMA) that are mainly frequency limited, the code division multiple access (CDMA) method which uses the DS-SS technique is interference limited. This means that an efficient power control method can increase the capacity of the DS-SS communications system. Computer simulations are used to evaluate the performance of the TDD power control method. Performance improvement of order of 12 to 17dB at bit error rate (BER) of 10-3 can be obtained for different methods of power control. The advantages of the TDD technique for the future DS-SS systems operating in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band are explained in an appendix to this paper.

    A new error rate formula for narrowband Differential Quaternary Phase Shift Keyed system in a Rayleigh fading channel is obtained in closed-form. The formula predicts a non-zero error probability for noiseless reception. As predicted, the computed error rates approach some constant or floor values as the signal-to-noise ratio is increased beyond a certain limit. In the presence of various Doppler frequency shifts, an IF filter bandwidth of about one times the symbol rate is found to lead to a minimum error probability prior to the appearence of the error rate floor.
